The first issue of a new Polish daily called Polska (Poland) is on sale as of today. The newspaper is a co-operation with the British The Times(London).
The new daily’s publications will include reprints from the British paper. Colourful supplements and regional additions are said to be Polska’s competitive advantage.
In the first days, the daily will come out in 600,000 to 700,000 copies. The pricing of the daily will vary from region to region. The most expensive will be a Friday issue.
Polska is published by Polskapresse publishing company owned by the German publishing group Verlagsgruppe Passau.
Polskapresse has operated on the Polish market since 1994.
Media analysts say that the newspaper market has become crowded in Poland, and sustaining high sales through taking readers from other dailies and creating new ones in the process, will be difficult for the Polskapresse publishers.
So far, it has mainly focused on regional dailies, including Gazeta Krakowska in Kraków, Dziennik Bałtycki in Gdańsk, Dziennik Zachodni in Silesia, Dziennik Łódzki, and Ekspress Ilustrowany in Łódź, Głos Wielkopolski in Poznań and Słowo Polskie Gazeta Wrocławska in Wrocław.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE)- POLAND today announced the formation of Sony Computer Entertainment Polska Sp. z.o.o., a new, wholly owned subsidiary of SCEE to further develop the PlayStation business in the rapidly growing Polish market, effective April 1, 2008.
In recognition of the increasing importance of the Central and Eastern European market to PlayStation, the announcement of the formation of the new Polish subsidiary marks the commencement of a new focus by SCEE on the dynamic markets of the region from Czech Republic to Russia.

Torfarm buys Itero
Torfarm, a Polish drug wholesaler, has acquired a 76% stake in Itero, a pharma wholesaler based in Katowice, for almost PLN 45m (€12.5m). This gave Torfarm an additional 3% market share and leadership of the Polish drug wholesale market.
At present, Torfarm controls 21% of the market, while its main competitor, the largest Polish drug wholesaler, Polska Grupa Farmaceutyczna (PGF), has approx. 20%.
Itero is a perfect fit with the Torfarm group as it has a similar strategy of not owning or opening its own pharmacies, according to Piotr Sucharski, the firm’s general director. What’s more, Itero’s geographical coverage will strengthen Torfarm’s position in the south of the country.
Torfarm has offered the remaining shareholders in Itero a buy-out of their shares for a total of PLN 13m (€3.6m). The total cost of acquiring a 100% stake is estimated by Torfarm at PLN 58.07m (€16.1m).
The transaction has already been approved by the Office for Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK). It has been financed with its own resources and a bank credit line.
Torfarm is still open to other acquisitions, in particular of local wholesalers without their own pharmacies.

Poland's second-largest power company Tauron Polska Energia plans to start talks with the country's largest copper miner KGHM about building a power plant of up-to-5,000 MW near the south-western city of Legnica, daily Parkiet reported its deputy chief executive as saying.
'We want to initiate talks with KGHM about building (the plant) near Legnica,' Remigiusz Nowakowski, deputy chief of state-controlled Tauron - which controls 20 pct of the Polish power market and was previously called Energetyka Poludnie - told Parkiet. 'There are large deposits of brown coal there.'
The construction of a 5,000 MW coal-fired power plant could cost around 7.5 bln eur, the paper said.

Commercials promoting Wrocław - Poland's bid to EXPO 2012 are being aired on CNN, mostly in prime time.
TV spots present Poland as a dynamic, modern, European country made for development and leisure, says Andrzej Sadoś of the Polish Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Poland's symbol in the spot is an apple. Traditional Polish connotations, such as Chopin and folk music do not appear in the commercial, because it is addressed to young and wealthy people, explains Paweł Kowalewski, producer of the ad.
The final choice of the EXPO 2012 host city will be announced in November। Wrocław is one of three cities competing for the privilege. The others are the Korean Yeosu and the Maroccan Tanger

HSBC lures with offer for enterprises
Warsaw (Puls Biznesu) – European banking leader will fight for corporate clients. It plans to have 1,000 clients and eight standard retail outlets in Poland.
HSBC Bank Polska today focuses on investment banking and has so far conducted over 40 transactions worth over PLN 21.5bn (EUR 5.7bn). Its other priority businesses include retail banking and treasury banking. HSBC wants to develop corporate banking unit now.
“Our target is 1,000 clients till the end of 2008. We have 300 of them today. The goal is ambitious but I’m sure we’ll manage”, Rob Carver, corporate banking managing director at HSBC Bank Polska said.
The bank will look for clients among, both, big and small companies.
It’s offer is mainly directed to exporters and importers.
“To these companies, we may offer services of world’s best develop network of standard retail outlets. HSBC is present in 83 markets. We can thus support a company’s operations all over the world. We are particularly strong in Asia and the Middle East”, Guy Hamilton, Central and Eastern Europe managing director said.
Exports in Poland grow 18.5 percent annually, imports grow 19.1 percent. Meanwhile, Poland is believed to be one of the most attractive countries to be invested in.

LONDON - Italy's UniCredito has overcome the final regulatory hurdles that will allow it to create the largest bank in central Europe. The go-ahead from Poland, after months of protracted discussions and negotiations, will position UniCredito to capitalize on the rapid growth expected in the Eastern European banking sector.
Poland's regulatory authority gave approval to the merger of UniCredito's BPH bank with Bank Pekao, it confirmed on Wednesday. The merged bank will have assets of 102 billion zlotys ($38.2 billion) and overtakes state-run PKO Bank Polski as the country's largest lender.
The announcement marks the end of a long and drawn out process, with the regulator dragging its heels even after the government gave the merger its grudging approval.
UniCredito (other-otc: UNCFF - news - people ) was down 1 euro cent (1 cent), or 0.2%, at 6.28 euros ($8.86) on Thursday in Milan.
In August, UniCredito agreed to sell 200 branches of BPH, the brand name and part of its equity stake to General Electric Money, a financial arm of General Electric (nyse: GE - news - people ) for 625.5 million euros ($882.4 million). GE beat other financial institutions, including PKO, to acquire the company. UniCredito has insisted that it got itself a good deal through the sale, pointing out that last year the 200 branches being sold had a net profit of 7 million euros, compared with the 324 million euro profits at the 285 branches it has held on to. The merged BPH will have over 1,000 branches across the country.
Bank Pekao and BPH, which are currently Poland's second- and third-largest banks respectively, have recently posted strong quarterly results, buoyed by the massive growth that has been taking place in the Eastern European financial sector.
Increasing prosperity within Poland's population has helped drive up domestic consumption, and the demand for financial services, including mortgages. Last year lending by Polish banks rose by 5.5%.
The news is a welcome development for UniCredito, which has just undergone a major transformation of its own. On Oct. 1 it completed its takeover of fellow Italian Capitalia, catapulting it to the top of the Italian banking sector. (See: " Italy Creates Europe's Second Biggest Bank")

The IMS platform will enable Exatel to reach consumers and businesses with its innovative personalized IP telephony service portfolio and enable consumers and businesses to lower operational costs.
This agreement represents another step in Exatel’s plan to expand into the mass market to significantly increase its profile in the consumer sector, while building on its strong position as a service provider in the business market by targeting small enterprises.
Alcatel-Lucent Feature Server 5000, the key element of the platform installed at Exatel, is one of the state-of-the-art IMS-based platforms. It allows delivery of voice services through various types of networks and technologies. One server supports both legacy and IP phone services for fixed network users and collaborates with SIP terminals of fixed and mobile network subscribers using dual-system phones (e.g. GSM/WiFi). Offered solution consists of all the logical and functional elements of fully standardized IMS-based network, while it is deployed in unique, compact chassis. In addition to the Feature Server 5000, Exatel will install Media Gateway Controllers and Media Gateways from Alcatel-Lucent. Media Gateway Controllers and Gateways form the core of IP network transformation and enable interworking of calls on the IP network with the legacy TDM phone network.
The solution will allow the user a wide-range of capabilities, which they can personally manage via a Web-based GUI. This platform also enables an increased penetration of the profitable Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) market and the Bitstream Access market. The investment threshold required to provide new services is reduced and the system offers high scalability, with the capacity of up to 160,000 subscribers supported by a single server.

ARNHEM, The Netherlands, October 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ARCADIS , the international consulting and engineering company, today announced the award of a EUR 11 million contract to design a 65 km long section of the A-1 motorway in Poland. The contract was awarded to an ARCADIS-led consortium with partners Mosty Katowice, Transprojekt Warsaw and DHV Polska. Client is the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. The project is co-financed by the European Union.
The design work will take 18 months and includes the preparation of building and construction designs, environmental impact and permitting support and construction contract documents. The section will be part of the motorway Gdansk - Torun - Czestochowa - Katowice and further to the southern Polish/Czech border. It will be a dual carriageway motorway with two lanes in each direction, a median and emergency lanes. The width of the median will allow for the later addition of a third traffic lane in both directions.
Traveller comfort and safety and environmental protection are essential in the project. It will therefore include the design of architecturally appealing engineering structures and service areas for passenger and freight vehicles. Also, a drainage system and environmental protection features (sound barriers, retention ponds and separators) will be installed. The project will also include motorway maintenance areas for administrative personnel and facilities for the road service staff and materials.

Cadbury Schweppes PLC, the world's largest candy maker, plans to move some chocolate production to Poland from the U.K., eliminating 700 jobs to reduce costs.
A plant at Keynsham, southwest England, is scheduled to close by 2010, affecting 500 workers, the London-based company said.
Cadbury will cut another 200 jobs during the same period at a plant in Bournville, central England, which will take on some of the Keynsham factory's work.
Cadbury said in June it planned to shed 7,500 jobs, or 15 per cent of its candy workforce, to boost profitability. The cuts will increase margins to the "mid-teens" by 2011 from the current 10 per cent, chief financial officer Ken Hanna has said.
The confectioner bought Warsaw-based chocolate maker Wedel in 1998. Staffing and manufacturing costs are lower in Poland than in the U.K., according to Cadbury.

CADBURY TREBOR BASSETT PROPOSES RESTRUCTURING OF UK CHOCOLATE MANUFACTURING

Cadbury Trebor Bassett today announced proposals to restructure its UK chocolate manufacturing in order to achieve greater supply chain efficiencies.
In order to continue to grow and remain competitive in the future we need to operate more effectively and reduce costs. Therefore, we are proposing a phased closure of our Keynsham chocolate factory from 2009 to 2010, affecting all 500 employees.
Chocolate production from Keynsham would move to both our Bournville factory and to our sister factory in Poland, with the Bournville site receiving an additional £40m investment.
This investment would enhance Bournville's status as a centre of excellence for chocolate production, and enable greater efficiencies within the site's chocolate assortment production.
It is also proposed that some chocolate assortment production would move from Bournville to Poland in 2008. This, together with an ongoing efficiency improvement plan would result in a reduction of approximately 200 jobs in Bournville from 2008 to 2010. It is hoped that any phased redundancies can be achieved voluntarily.
Our other two UK chocolate manufacturing sites at Chirk in North Wales and Leominster, Herefordshire are unaffected by this proposal.
We are now entering into full and detailed consultation with our employees at both sites. We are committed to treating our people with sensitivity and consideration in line with our values. Under these proposals significant resources will be made available to help employees to find new jobs, retrain those who would want to learn new skills and provide independent financial advice.

Frankfurt-based Messer Group recently broke ground on an air separation plant in the Upper-Silesian city of Rybnik in Poland’s industrial heartland. Beginning in 2009, the plant will produce technical and medical gases for the Polish, Slovakian and Czech Markets.
Owner and CEO Stefan Messer said, “In our core markets, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, we are using our experience to continuously expand the supply structure.” “In many processes, compliance with the European Union environmental directives is only possible with the help of the properties of gases.” In the period leading up to 2011, the Messer Group is investing €450 million ($634.9 million) in air separation plants, gas filling plants and technology centers, of which €300 million ($423.2 million) will be invested in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Particular attention will be given to expanding the gas production plants on customer sites with the main aim of further reducing the number of gas deliveries by tanker trucks.
In addition to liquid technical gases, the plant in Rybnik will also produce medical oxygen for the ventilation of patients in hospitals or receiving home care; it will also supply high purity nitrogen for use in the food industry. “We will expand the supply of vital medical gases and medical equipment in Central and Eastern Europe,“ adds Stefan Messer. In Hungary, for example, the number of patients receiving home care has risen from 2,300 to almost 4,000 since 2004. Among other things, Messer distributes oxygen concentrators that allow patients who are dependent on a constant supply of oxygen due to chronic respiratory disease to continue to live a flexible day-to-day life.
The production plant in Rybnik that will supply the high purity medical oxygen is being built by the plant engineering specialist Cryogenic Engineering, a joint venture between Messer and HangYang Ltd., the largest Chinese manufacturer of air separation plants.
The construction of the air separation plant will, for the first time, provide Messer in Poland with its own, independent product supply for the largest industrial gas market in Central Europe. The Polish company, which is the second largest in the Messer Group, achieved a turnover of around €50 million ($70.5 million) in the last year. (gasworld.com)

Gazy te znajdują zastosowanie w prawie wszystkich branżach, tj. w metalurgii, przemyśle chemicznym, spożywczym, elektronicznym, farmaceutycznym, obróbki metali, technologiach ochrony środowiska oraz w medycynie.
W Rybniku, obok ciekłych gazów technicznych, produkowany będzie również tlen medyczny, który jest stosowany m.in. w lecznictwie zamkniętym, jak i w terapii domowej wspomagając proces oddychania osobom z chronicznymi problemami oddechowymi. Oprócz tego instalacja produkować będzie azot o bardzo wysokim poziomie czystości do zastosowań w przemyśle spożywczym.
Budowa zakładu produkcyjnego w Rybniku będzie koordynowana przez przedsiębiorstwo budowy instalacji przemysłowych Cryogenic Engineering, spółkę joint venture firmy Messer i największego chińskiego producenta instalacji rozdziału powietrza HangYang Ltd. Spółka joint venture będzie także zajmować się działalnością produkcyjną zakładu. Budowa instalacji rozdziału powietrza po raz pierwszy umożliwia firmie Messer posiadanie niezależnego systemu zaopatrzenia na największym rynku zbytu dla gazów przemysłowych w Europie Środkowej tzn. w Polsce. Messer Polska Sp. z o.o., druga pod względem wielkości spółka córka grupy Messer osiągnęła w ubiegłym roku obrót w wysokości 50 milionów euro.

IBP Conex makes parts for pipes and taps at its factory in Dundee
A plumbing fittings company has announced plans to close its factory in Dundee with the loss of 66 jobs.
IBP Conex Ltd has confirmed it is to transfer the work carried out at its plant in the city to Poland.
The company said it needed to use cheaper labour to remain competitive in its market, after sharp rises in the price of basic materials.
Management broke the news on Thursday to staff and unions, who are now being consulted about the proposals.
Reduce costs
IBP chairman Trevor Murch told the BBC Scotland news website: "There is a likelihood the plant will be closed and up to 66 jobs will be affected.
"The work will mostly be transferred to our other facilities in Europe. Some will be sourced to China, but the main location is Poland.
"The drive behind the decision is that products are made from copper and copper prices have more than doubled.
"It is harder to compete in our market place and we have to look to see if we can cut costs. One way is to reduce the labour costs of manufacture."
'Difficult time'
Workers at the factory are being offered help to find other jobs by Scottish Enterprise Tayside.
A spokeswoman said: "We appreciate that this is a difficult time for the employees and we are seeking further information from the company.
"We will look at what we can do and what action is appropriate.
"There is continual and rapid change in the global manufacturing industry and we are working with companies to help them move towards more knowledge-intensive, high-skilled manufacturing to help Scotland compete on a global level.
"In Tayside, we are working closely with a number of companies to help them diversify their products and get into new markets to take advantage of opportunities and have already seen strong results.''

Since 1998 RAQport offers software installations on server appliances like the Sun Cobalt. Since several years we also deliver the same services for CentOS + BlueQuartz server appliances. They are the open source successor of the original Cobalt RaQs and offer a much more secure and more modern hosting platform than the original RaQs.

Aventurin{e} allows you - with the same ease as on a Cobalt RaQ or BlueQuartz server - to create and manage virtual private servers. These virtual private servers can even run different Linux distributions. So on one Aventurin{e} master node you can run multiple different Linux distributions side by side. This makes it ideal for ISPs or companies with their own IT infrastructure, as you can utilize your existing hardware in the most efficient fashion.

This server appliance uses CentOS as operating system. As GUI interface it uses BlueQuartz, which is based on the open sourced RaQ550 Sausalito architecture from Sun Cobalt.
Sites, users, mailing lists and settings can directly be imported with the built in CMU from any Cobalt RaQ. So this is an inexpensive way to trade the aging Cobalt RaQ’s against much more modern hard- and software, while retaining the well known functionality and GUI interface.
A CentOS + BlueQuartz Server Appliance can do everything a RaQ550 and it does it much faster. A CentOS + BlueQuartz Server Appliance can do all including Frontpage. We do not have Chilisoft ASP at this moment ) - The serial ATA hardisks have a throughput of approximately 50 MBit/seconds and even the basic model with a 2.8GHz CPU outperforms a RaQ550 by several magnitudes.

SABMiller $89 mln deal adds to Polish beer brands
Brewing giant SABMiller (SAB.L: Quote, Profile , Research) said on Friday its Polish subsidiary had agreed a 65 million euro ($89.10 million) deal to buy brewer Browar Belgia from Belgium's Palm Breweries NV.
SABMiller, whose beers include Miller, Peroni and Castle, said the acquisition would help it keep pace with growing demand for its Polish subsidiary's beer adding that the deal was subject to approval from Polish competition authorities.
Browar Belgia brews Wojak, Gingers and Frater beers and has annual production capacity of more than 1 million hectolitres at its brewery in south east Poland
